Sangre de Cristo/Trinchera Ranches

The Sangre de Cristo or Trinchera  Ranches were developed in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range, with Mt. Blanca at over 14,000 feet, highlighting the scenery. The Ranches are not gated, the roads are public roads maintained by the Costilla County. In the winter the county plows the roads up to 9000 Ft. Membership of the the Sangre de Crristo Ranch Owners Association (SDCRO) is voluntary.

To the west, the San Luis Valley is a fertile High Plains Desert, roughly 7,500 feet above sea level. The landscape of the 44,000 acre Ranches consists of mostly sagebrush and Pinon at the lower elevations, and Aspen and various tall pine varieties above 9000 ft. The Mountain Home Reservoir (see the map below) in SDCR is a popular Public Reccreation Area stocked with various types of fish. Hunting is well-supported in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches. Over 5,000 acres of Greenbelt are dedicated to public hunting and recreation. The Sangre de Cristo Ranches are located in Unit 83, which is home to a large population of grouse and elk.The main entrance to the Ranches is about 2 miles to the east of Fort Garland, Colorado.
